Target Audience

Our trailer is of the "action thriller" genre. Because film genres are not correlated with a specific group of people, our target audience is broader than that of a music genre. However, we have tried to identify the patterns and trends seen within our target audience; the people who like action thrillers, and the people who don't.

Despite the broadness of our target audience, there still are basic stereotypes with film, for example, boys like action, while girls like romantic films.

Target Age: 15-40
Male teenagers enjoy a powerful adrenaline rush; most action films encourage audiences to liken themselves with the tone and experience a similar feeling as the protagonist is depicting. Although, this specific interest can be continued into adulthood; why the age boundary ranges to 40 years old. Films like "Red" are specifically made to target an older audience; to encourage elderly people to experience a similar 'adrenaline rush.' However, with "Red" as an exception, the market is usually not targetted for people over 40 because they are seen to want to 'slow down.' Action films appeal greatly to the younger generation; making them the primary audience.

Income Bracket: B-C2 and also E
The target audience for our genre ranges from middle class (B), to skilled working class (C2). The social level (E) is included within our target audience because this accounts for students; who are highly likely to want to watch our film, permitting they are into our 'action thriller.' People that fit into the B-C2 boundary will have jobs such as;
  • Teachers
  • Graphic Designers
  • Clerical Workers
  • Electricians
  • Plumbers
Usually, an action film will specifically target members at middle class level C, but because we are also including a thrilling aspect to our trailer, I have widened the social bracket to B; smarter people will enjoy the more intellectually challenging 'thrilling' aspects within the film.

The people that watch films such as ours don't only go because they can. The various different conventions mentioned above are what lure audiences in. Without these requirements it is unlikely that people who enjoy these types of film would make the effort to go out and see them; when making our trailer we need to ensure that we incorporate as many of the bullet points above in order to appeal to our target audience effectively.

Audience Targets
Niche - People who like something out of the ordinary; an escape from reality. We will utilize this target audience by using action to help achieve this 'escape from reality.'

Mass - People who just want to watch a film, possibly for the escapism side of things. This 'need' to watch a film  is possibly because of the lack of action in their own lives and wish to gain their adrenaline through a film on screen.
